Residents furious as squatters move into empty Council home

March 10th, 2010

Katherine and I outside the empty home in JanuaryResidents of Nelson Road are furious with Haringey Council after a family council home that has been left derelict for almost a year has now been taken over by squatters.   The home was taken over last week after the Council failed to act on promises to start renovating the house, at least 11 months after evicting the last tenants.  One of the neighbours is an elderly lady in her eighties and I’m told she is quite upset by the situation, which will now probably take months more to resolve.

I’ve been demanding action from the Council for 3 months, ever since a local resident complained to local campaigner Katherine Reece about the state of the house back in November 2009 (see post from January).  I was told that the house would be back in use by 26 March at the latest – but Haringey have failed to even start work on renovating the building, so this promise was clearly not going to be kept.

I’ve emailed the Labour cabinet member in charge of housing to express our anger at the Council’s incompatence and to demand action to sort out the squatter situation so the house can be used by a local family.  There is such a long waiting list for larger council homes, and so many families trapped in overcrowded temporary accomodation, that this situation is a real scandal.

Pothole madness – why wont the Council act?

February 4th, 2010

Pothole in Mount View Road February 2010Like many councillors I’ve spent the last few weeks reporting all the potholes I can spot on our local roads.  Its a pretty thankless task – sometimes you think it would be easier to send in a list of all the places that don’t have potholes.  So far I’ve reported them on Granville, Inderwick, Nelson, Stapleton Hall and Mount View Roads (this photo is from Mount View).

Of course, the current rash of potholes has been caused by the snow and ice, and the Lib Dems have pressed the Council to do a special survey to identify these new holes.  However, the Council have refused to go out and find the holes themselves and instead say they will only fill them if they are reported by residents or councillors.

I think this neglectful policy is absolute madness, as it gaurantees some potholes are missed and not repaired.  The Council has a duty to keep our streets safe and potholes are incredibly dangerous for cyclists and motorcyclists.  Its not acceptable for Labour to just decide potholes are not a priority.

The long term solution is for the roads with the most potholes to be completely resurfaced.  It’s such a waste of money to keep patching-up roads where the surface is completely worn out and crumbling away.  I’ve called time and time for these roads to be resurfaced – but too often the Council refuse to act, even though it would mean saving money in the long run.

Scandal of family council house left empty for a year

January 27th, 2010

Katherine and I outside the derelict Council houseLike all Haringey Councillors, I’m regularly contacted by families in desperately overcrowded or temporary accommodation looking for a family Council house.   These families wait for years, and there are over 16,000 families on Haringey’s housing waiting list – with 566 looking for a home with more than 3 bedrooms.

So when residents alerted local Lib Dem activist Katherine Reece to a large 3-storey empty council house in Nelson Road (N8) I was determined to investigate why it wasn’t being used.  I’ve now got a response which shows the house has been left empty and boarded up since April 2009, and will not be returned to use until March 2010 at the earliest.

Unsuprsingly the house now looks like a dump and the neighbours must be furious.  But what is really scandalous is that Haringey Council is happy to let this house, which could be a wonderful family home, lie empty for nearly a year.   No wonder we have such long housing waiting lists in Haringey, when our Labour-run Council is so wasteful with its own housing stock.

Co-incidentially, the national Lib Dems have just announced proposals to bring 250,000 empty homes back into use, to boost jobs and tackle our housing crisis.  Ideas like this are clearly badly needed in Haringey.

New car club bays planned for Stroud Green

January 2nd, 2010

Street sign on Nelson RoadI’ve received notice from the Council that Streetcar are planning to put 3 new cars into Stroud Green.   This is excellent news as I know lots of residents are making very active use of the car club and are keen for new sites.

The proposed locations are:

  • The Oakfield Road Bridge (when the current engineering works have finished)
  • Nelson Road, near the junction with Ridge Road (see photo)
  • Osbourne Road, near the junction with Victoria Road

The formal consultation is planned for February, but if you have any views on these locations then please get in touch and I’ll pass them on ahead of then.  I’m pleased that they have responded to resident’s suggestions of putting car club bays in the roads inside the Controlled Parking Zone (CPZ), such as the Oakfield Road bridge, rather than on the clogged roads just outside the CPZ (see previous post).

The new cars should be in place by June.

The leaning lamppost of Nelson Road

November 18th, 2009

The leaning lamppostMy campaign to get our ancient local streetlights improved was re-ignited this week when I saw this precarious lamppost in Nelson Road (pictured).  It looks like its going to topple into residents’ front gardens.

The photo was taken at midday and the light was on – so I think the timer must be out of kilter too.  I’ve reported it to the street-lighting officers – suggesting that this shows the need for a proper programme for reconditioning or replacing the lampposts.  At the present rate of work these old columns will have to last another hundred years.

I’m also pressing the Council to save as many of the old columns as possible to recondition and re-use in appropriate locations.  But it demonstrates the Labour Council’s complete inability to get even the basics right, that we still have so many of these rusting, dull, energy-inefficient old lamps in the Borough.
