Earlier this month I attended a meeting with the parking officers in charge of the review of the Finsbury Park Controlled Parking Zone (CPZ), and the new cabinet member in charge of parking Cllr Nilgun Canver. The officers came armed with maps of the proposed consultation areas, which they’d drawn up following a previous meeting (see picture).
The full consultation with residents will happen in the Autumn, with residents inside the CPZ being asked if they still support the CPZ and whether they want the rules changed (different hours and different sub-zones within the CPZ). Residents outside will be asked if they want the CPZ extended, and what the hours of the extension should be.
It is proposed that the consultation will extend up to and including Ridge Road. Roads to the north of Ridge Road would be notified about the consultation, but as there is no strong campaign for a CPZ in those roads the Council do not plan to include them in the formal consultation area. There will be a simultaneous consultation on extending the Crouch End CPZ which will cover Ferme Park Road and and roads to the west.
Over the next few months the Council will be drawing up the consultation questions and finalising the consultation zones, and will be running focus groups of local residents from different roads to help them with this. If you want to take part in the focus groups then please get in contact.
The process is very ponderous, and any changes or extensions to the CPZ will not be implemented till 2011. However, these focus groups should hopefully mean that the consultation works better and that there is less criticism of the consultation process than last time.

I lived previously in the Finsbury park CPZ. Having lived with the CPZ for a number of years I have realised that it has actually hindered my life far more than it has helped. Far from being there to prevent parking on match days and drivers leaving cars to use the nearby tube station, it has actually gone far further and has become a hinderance to peoples liberty and a barrier to living in peace.
Many friends can no longer visit me without having to be paranoid about visitors vouchers at ANY time between 7AM and 7PM. So a friend staying over night must get up at the early hours simply to put a voucher in the car before 7am – a system that is quite franky annoying and unnecessary.
I ask this; if it is (as propsed by the council) only to help protect residents from drivers using the stadium or station then why not a) have only a 2 hour restricted time during they day (sat midday to 2pm) to prevent people leaving their car there while they go to work, and b) includ an additional time for match days. Other that that there is no other reason for their being a draconian time restriction for 12 hours a day.
So….do extend the area (if the residents want this) but PLEASE give us more humane hours of control instead of this rediculous system in place now !

I have been to meetings without number at which residents have asked that the existing CPZs be reviewed first, before any more consultations take place. This would it a fairer consultation. Why have these requests been ignored?

Helen – I did pass on this suggestion at the meeting and also emailed the officer responsible for the review asking for details of how a 2 stage review would work (1st stage a review of inside the CPZ and 2nd stage in roads outside). I haven’t had a response to this yet, however, the officers view seems to be that this would unacceptably long delay to the consultation with people outside the CPZ – where lots of residents are really pushing for it to happen ASAP (there have been petitions on Granville Road and Quernmore Road). I have to say I also get more complaints from people who want the CPZ consultation to happen quickly compared to complaints from those who want it to happen slowly.
Davin – I hope the CPZ review gives people the opportunity to say they want shorter hours in many parts of the CPZ. Apart from in the roads very close to the tube station I think there is quite strong support for reducing the CPZ hours – but we’ll have to see if that’s what people really think.

Richard – I am outside the CPZ and today one simply cannot park on the non-CPZ roads (they are full) whilst spaces abound inside the CPZ! Thank you for your persistent patience in following this up. I for one am very grateful.

I am in favour of the extension of the CPZ as I too live outside (Ridge Road) the current CPZ and I am fed up with not being able to park even remotely near my house.
The recent front page in the Hornsey and Crouch End Journal regarding the crouch end CPZ extension suggests this could be fast tracked. What does this mean for the Stroud Green CPZ extension timing? If the crouch end CPZ happens first then this will make our parking woes even worse? Will we be consulted on the crouch end fast track? Can we fast track stroud green CPZ too?

Scott,
The Crouch End CPZ expansion is going at a faster pace than the Finsbury Park CPZ review. This is because there is going to be a full consultation on the Finsbury Park CPZ both inside and outside the CPZ zone. Haringey Council have stalled on doing this for years.
However, I’m pressing for this to happen as quickly as possible. The Council have already held a focus group to help design the review questionnaire and I’m now pressing them to get on and finalise it so the consultation can start.
I hope this is helpful. Ridge Road is inside the consultation area for extending the Finsbury Park CPZ.
Regards,
Richard
