Residents’ views sought on proposed tree cull

October 11th, 2009

The trees on Denton RoadEver since I saw the notices on the condemned trees at the bottom of Denton Road (see previous post), I’ve been pressing the Council about what is happening and why.   These are beautiful mature Acacia trees and it would be a shame to lose so many of them at once.

The Council have assured me that the trees will be replaced with new trees in similar locations – 4 planted this winter and 4 next winter.  I’ve asked if any can be saved – but they seem pretty determined to remove them all because of the pavement damage.

However, I’m still very keen to get resident’s views on whether these trees should be removed, and where any replacements should be sited.  At my request, the council officers responsible have agreed to hold a site visit to show residents what is proposed and listen to any concerns.  Please do contact me if you want to take attend – or have a comment.

It appears this issue is ongoing.

The Tree Surgeons are in Victoria Road now. I noticed tree stumps appearing a while back and wondered why this was happening.

I could perhaps understand the felling, if the trees were dead or their roots were growing too close to houses, but to cut them down because of pavements seems a bit drastic, as you say. The pavement next to the tree they’re cutting right now seems fine. It appears to me someone has just said cut them all down.

Planting new trees is of course great news, but does this mean we have to have many years of bleak streets until they grow? Are they going to cut them all down, or just some? I don’t recall seeing any sort of pamphlet telling the residents that this was going to happen.

Achem, I may have jumped the gun on the particular tree I was talking about, the tree surgeons have moved on after trimming it :-) but still, trees have been disappearing, and the tree surgeons have been around all summer, but as far as I know, no letter has been sent telling people what’s going on.

    Mark,

Thanks for putting the comments on my website. It is concerning that they seem to be doing tree works without telling anyone beforehand. I have put in a formal council member’s enquiry asking what is happening and why residents weren’t informed.

    Kind regards,

    Richard
