Burnt out van on Mount View Road

November 8th, 2008

I was shocked to see this burnt out van on Mount View Road next to the covered reservoir, as I was delivering our Stroud Green FOCUS newsletter today.  I’m aware Mount View has become a bit of a dumping ground for trade vehicles and old cars because it is just outside the existing controlled parking zone – but this is worse than usual.

I’ve contacted the Council and asked them to urgently remove the van, and also alerted the local ’safer neighbourhoods’ police team.  Please contact me if you are concerned about any dumped vehicles in your area.

Still like Ed’s idea of somehow making the reservoir into a green park. It might involve some adjustments by Thames Water and the whole idea might be unfeasible. But I have always thought that the idea is at least worth exploring.

There is *precious* little green space in this big city and it seems that if some trouble and expense is gone to over this, there could be a big dividend. At present the reservoir is seen as a dead or empty zone and if there was more activity there, as with most fly-tipping areas, maybe there’d be less temptation to dump.

    Clive,

I agree – Ed’s idea of opening up the reservoir is really inspired and hopefully would reduce the temptation to dump on nearby roads. However, whenever I’ve raised this issue I’ve always been warned it’s virtually impossible to get Thames Water to take action like this. It would take a real concerted effort from the Council to persuade them it was a good idea – and I’m not sure the Council is ready or willing to do that just yet. But that doesn’t mean we should give up.

Co-incidentally I discussed the idea with Planning Committee colleagues on Friday. One councillor said she’d heard of another covered reservoir where they had allowed sheep to graze to reduce the need for mowing. An interesting idea for Stroud Green! Though I don’t know how long they’d last – apparently chickens get stolen from our local allotments.
